The famous Salt Mines in Maras are located 40 km northwest of Cusco, with more than 3000 lakes. Each lake has an area of approximately 5 m².
During the dry season, it is filled with salt water, which comes from a natural spring above salt ponds. By evaporating the water the salt crystallizes and, when the salt reaches a height of 10 cm from the ground, it is gradually withdrawn from three layers. Depending on the layer from which the salt originates (varies in color), its use is determined: in the kitchen or as a relaxing bath salt.
Salt is stored in cloth bags. Subsequently, they are taken to regional salt merchants.
The salt must be iodized according to the state standard. In addition, it contains a natural source of calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and copper.
After completing a visit to the Salt Mines, we stop in the town of Maras, where we can see the dominating structure of this small town - the old colonial church.
Note: The Maras visit is combined with a visit to the Moray circular terraces due to its proximity.
